Maths is for everyone! It is diverse, engaging, and essential in equipping you with skills to reach your future aspiration and destination, whatever they may be. We will have a maths class that will suit you, and our supportive tutors will help you achieve skills and confidence in using maths both with and without a calculator.

You will:
1. Develop your knowledge, skills and understanding of mathematical methods and concepts.
2. Be able to solve mathematical problems.
3. Be able to make deductions and draw conclusions.
4. Develop your skills to communicate mathematical information.  

Who is this course for?
Functional Skills qualifications in maths are ideal for learners wishing to develop practical, transferable skills in order to work confidently, effectively and independently in life. They are suitable for a wide range of individuals and are fundamental to the successful completion of various wider qualifications and frameworks, such as Foundation Learning and apprenticeships.

This is not an exam but a means of ensuring we get you off to a great start.

Course aims
Use of numbers and the number system: * use numbers of any size. * read, write and make use of positive and negative integers of any size. * use, order and compare integers, fractions, decimals, percentages and ratios as well as recognise the value of a digit in any whole or decimal number. * use numerical and spatial patterns for a purpose and calculate with, and convert between, numbers written as fractions, decimals, percentages and ratios. Use of measures, shape and space: * handle relationships between measurements of various kinds. * use angles and coordinates when involving position and direction. * make use of geometric properties in calculations with 2-D and 3-D shapes and understand the relationships between them. Handle information and data: * construct, interpret and evaluate a range of statistical diagrams. * calculate and interpret probabilities. * calculate, analyse, compare and interpret appropriate data sets, tables, diagrams and statistical measures such as common averages (mean, median, mode) and spread (range). * use statistics to compare sets of data. * identify patterns and trends from data as well as recognise simple correlation. Solving mathematical problems and decision making: * use the knowledge and skills listed above to recognise and obtain a solution or solutions to a complex problem. * address individual problems, some of which draw upon a combination of all three mathematical areas.

Qualification
NCFE Functional Skills Maths The qualifications are gained through final examination, which is composed of 2 sections: Section A: The non-calculator section. Section B: The calculator section.

How will this course be delivered?
The content of the sessions will be a combination of presentations, group and individual activities, group discussions and individual support as required. Course materials will be provided and, towards the end of the course, plenty of practice papers!

Will I need to study or practise outside the classroom?
Formal home learning will be set on a regular basis and feedback will be given to help you improve. There is a considerable amount of work for you to do in your own time to ensure you are successful in achieving this qualification. Please allow a minimum of two hours per week for extra study.

How will I know I'm making progress?
Your tutor will set objectives for each session and give feedback on how you are progressing. You will agree personal targets as part of your Individual Learning Plan (ILP), and you will review your targets throughout the course to check your own progress.

What will I need for the course?
You will need a pen, A4 paper and a file or folder to keep your work in one place. It would also be useful if you could obtain some squared paper for drawing graphs and charts. A ruler, set squares and a protractor. Access to a PC or laptop is essential for online courses and recommended, but not essential, for traditional, classroom based courses.

Progression
Look out for information regarding follow on courses. Depending on your starting point, you will be able to progress through the various levels of Functional Skills Maths and then to GCSE Maths. As a Functional Skills Level 2 qualification is the equivalent of a Grade 4 GCSE, gaining a Level 2 will also give you access to further and higher education opportunities of both a vocational and academic nature.
